Seven (Husbands) and Resurrection!
Question: What is Matthew 22:23-33?
There is quite a lot in these verses.
To be remembered at the start, is the fact that Jesus when being quizzed by the authorities, kept to the Law of Moses, as He stated often, “I come only to the lost sheep of Israel”, Matt.15:24!
This was imperative due to the fact of much miss- teaching by many different groups, all purporting to be correct; (quite similar to the present state of understanding and teaching in the world today)!
In this case, the speakers in v.23 onwards, asking the question regarding resurrection and the 7 husbands of one woman as each man died, were Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection of the dead; so they thought that they had cornered Jesus with the question! Jesus’ answer in Vs. 29–33 in a few words, gave, the answer, the Truth, and disqualified the Sadducees from the discussion, because they could not counter the comment!
Jesus’ reference to “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”, and “the God of the living”, completely threw the Sadducees, because they knew nothing of the approaching “New Covenant”, which Jesus would present at His “last Supper” with His disciples.
The Pharisees had heard what Jesus had said to the Sadducees, and they took great pleasure in what seemed to them as the necessary reduction of their power, regarding resurrection.
The Pharisees power grew, and they were/ are the ‘ruling’ religious power of Israel; which they used in Acts 28:25–28, to reject Jesus’ offer of Salvation in His shed blood on the cross of Calvary; which instigated the prophecy of Isa.6:9–10, which Paul declared! That placed them in the state of Lo-Ammi (not My people), which will end when the state of Zech.12:10 is reached!
