God, Jeremiah and Israel

Question:  Why is Jeremiah often referred to as the weeping prophet?

His Commission by God was against Judah (in the south of Israel).  He was given the task of taking God’s angry and sorrowful message to the “kings, the princes, the priests and the people”!  He was told by God that they would all fight against him; but would “not prevail against him”!

Jeremiah found this very hurtful; but not as much as the nation’s rejection of God, and their worship of Idols!  Israel is likened as unto “a bride” that “forgot” their bridegroom!

Jehovah God pleads with them to return to Him, despite their “unfaithfulness”, citing His divorce from Israel, Judah’s sister, but to no avail.

The very important point is made (which is not acknowledged or understood to this day); that Israel and Judah are as “married” to God; and that He wishes to be a family with them in Zion! (Jer. 3:14)!

The great sin of Israel and Judah, made Jeremiah mourn and weep!
